Why we're making Sofra

It started with a fridge that had plenty in it, a phone full of saved recipes, and no quick way to tell which of them we could actually make.

sofra (n.)The table, or the cloth spread on the floor, that a meal is laid out on. Turkish, with close relatives in Arabic (sufra) and Persian (sofreh).

At six o'clock on a Tuesday, finding a recipe we could actually make meant opening a dozen tabs and checking each one against the fridge.

Our recipes were spread across bookmarks, screenshots and a notes app, and the sites they came from were built around ads.

So we started building the app we wanted: one place for our recipes that keeps a list of what's in the kitchen, and can answer “what can I make tonight?” from recipes we already trust.

The name fits that idea: a sofra is where everything for a meal ends up in one place.

Sofra is paid for by subscriptions and nothing else. There are no ads, and we don't sell your data. If enough people like it to pay for Premium, it keeps going. That's the whole business model.

Where things stand: the app is built and in final testing on iPhone and Android. Next stop is the App Store and Google Play.

How we build it

A few rules we stick to

You see every change before it's saved.

That goes for recipe changes and ingredient swaps alike. A change you keep is saved as a new version, and your original stays put.

The free plan has to be worth having.

Your whole library, the pantry, the shopping list and cooking mode are free. If the free plan were only a teaser, you'd never find out whether the app is any good.

You can take your recipes with you.

Export them as Markdown or JSON whenever you like, or delete your account and everything in it from inside the app.

It has to work mid-cook.

That means big text, a screen that stays on, and timers that still go off after you've walked away. If something is awkward to use with flour on your hands, it isn't finished.

Try it when it launches.

We'll email you when Sofra is ready to download on iPhone and Android.
